im looking for something like trey anastasio's guitar: koa semi hollowbody, infinate sustain. i found one at abyssguitars.com (almost a replica)

the problem: i dont have 7000 dollars.

help, im a tone freak and i dont like big guitars.

thankie!

thats one sweet sounding guitar...... even cooler, check out his crazy signal path sometime. Couldnt find a link about it, but its worth checkin out!

Not bad fingers either!!!!!!!!

infinate sustain

...lol

that "infinate" sustain is not being produced by his guitar, but rather his signal chain. most likely has a lot to do with the compression pedals he uses.

The guitar has a lot to do with the sustain, but I'd bet that the phrase sampler, 2 tubescreamers, and other etcetera in that rig don't hurt the sustain.

As far as infinite sustain though, only a machine could emulate such a thing.

I've always been curious about Trey's rig, thanks for the link. It was very educational. I thought that I'd see some obvious compression unit in there somewhere, but I don't see anything. He's got one of the most compressed guitar tones I've ever heard so I'm surprised not to see something in there for that.

I always heard he used a Carl Martin compressor.

So then what's an Ebow for?

That would be a MACHINE that produces energy enough to keep a string vibrating indefinitely.

I always thought it was Ross compressor. Maybe Carl Martin is what he uses now though. I'm sure he uses a compressor in his chain. There's no way to get that squashed sound without one. Besides, I built a Ross compressor, and I can get some of the "middy-squash" to some extent (dunno how to use it right though...). I also believe that GCB-95 is modded by Teese to an RMC3. I don't think any professional musician using a wah can consider a stock GCB-95 as a good wah anyways.
A note about the guitar: It's a true hollowbody, not a semi-hollow. That means that there isn't a centerblock in the body to stop the feedback on that smaller bodied guitar (probably lots of sustain from that). I also remember it being 24 3/4 with 24 frets, and that Ed Roman had some company on his site doing replicas a while back (I believe they ran for about 3500-4000). Don't know if Crazy Ed is still selling those though.

I believe you are right about the compressor. I always mix those two up.
