I think I'd like to have a go at close miking a drum kit some time. At the moment I have a pair of ECM8000s I can use as overheads, a Beyer M201 for the Snare, an M99 for the Kick and a Sennheiser MD421 for the Floor Tom. Any ideas for rack Tom mics? Do all the tom mics have to be the same? Because if not then I have an AKG D321 that might work on one Tom.

It's sometimes nice if they match but I've recorded kits before where not any two mics matched. Go for it.

Beyer 201. My all time favorite mic for toms and snares.

I could get another M201 and use the AKG mic on snare I guess

I use Sennheiser MD-421's on all the toms the majority of the time... very big-sounding, with nice, tight bottom.

Sennheiser's 504's if you find them or the succesor e604 from their evolution line.

i like my radio shack tom mics. dont give me no shit for it!
