Hi,

Anyone own this guitar? I read some bad reviews about the lack of bass resonance and the overly bright overall sound. I heard that the ones made in 2004 and not 2003 are ok. I played one in a shop today and it sounded nice.

Any views?

I just bought one from Shannoks, A retailer in King, N.C. Had it about a week. They had 2 of them in stock, and as far as I could tell, they were both identical in sound characteristics, well made. I had the tech tweak the rod for A little better action. I played several Taylors up to the $3,700.00 range and was going to buy whatever suited me no matter what the cost. Let me say this-when I played the 110, I could'nt believe the bright sound coming out of it. Very nice intonation wise. This guitar to me sounded very close to the more expensive models with the same body. Taylor takes pride in all their instruments I think. The bass I personally think sounds good to me. not too boomy, not too thin. There's not much in the way of eye candy-abalone inlays, etc., but I don't care about that, and I did'nt buy it for that. I bought it because it just sounded damn sweet.

There. Hope that helps you. Go play one! :D

Thanks Mr String. I agree with what you say. I had a big day today, playing guitars all over town and down the coast. I played guitars from $800 all the way up to $4500. I played Martins, Matons, Taylors, Gibsons, Epiphones and some assorted Australian brands. The one that I actually liked the best was the Taylor 110.

I came home and the first review I read on the net really got stuck into how bad the 110 was. Then I noticed the details about the make/ year. Apparently the models from 2003 had high actions and other differences in the neck join. I dunno. Maybe that guy had a 2003 model. I respect his opinion. It's good to find out all you can. To me the 110 looked, sounded and felt the best.

I have one, there were actually a few of them in stock at a local shop and I was able to try them all out before buying. One in particular had a really mellow sound that was very bland, another had a very bright and sparkling sound. That is the one I bought. I guess my point is that it seems they may have a lot of variance in how they sound. I would not want to have bought one without playing it first, that's for sure. However, the one I bought sounded better to me than several of the more expensive Taylors they had there.

Yeah, there were a lot of what I can only call 'anomolies' today as I travelled around playing all these guitars. Some very expensive guitars sounded poor, some of them had rough rusted old strings, which is no good. I think I detected a lot of different sounds, from the same guitars at different shops. Acoustics of the room probably played a part. The 110 I played had really resonant bass and very nice bright treble. I had my mind set on a Martin D-15. Played one, and did not have big raps for it. I think I will go the 110.

Yeah man, If you got a chance to sit down and play it, and it sounded good to you, then it IS good! That's how I do it anyway. I'd say you're making a good choice!

I think the best bang for buck Taylor is the 414. The tone is very full, balanced, and loud, and the price is right for what you get. Mine records beautifully.

Isn't the 414 like 1400-1800 bucks?
I'm sure it sounds great, but my 110-E cost me $650 and it sounds and records great! Granted that in the realm of $3500 acoustics, the 414 is still an inexpensive model, but if you find a good one, a 110 is an excellent bang for the buck investment!

Thanks for the replies. I am pretty sure I will go with the 110 at this stage. The fella at the store said he would include a hard case as well as the gig bag in the deal and I could get the lot for $1050 Australian. The shelf price for the 110 with the gig bag was $1299...so I suppose with the 110, the gig bag and the hard case (a Magnum WC 450) $1050 is a fairly good price.

I don't know if you need the electric portion of the guitar, but Taylor makes models without the electronics for about $300-500 less. I had a 710 a while back I got used for $750. Just my opinion, but that is a hell of a guitar for under a grand. Granted you have to find one used, but if you can hold out... ;)

tell him to shove the gig bag and toss in a brick of strings.

A brick of strings would have been pretty sweet, but he did say one packet of strings, the hard case, the gig bag and the 110, for $1050. I don't think I can really do much better than that all new. Probably can, I dunno. Sounds ok.

What are you going to do with the gig bag? You willbe getting a hardshell case. once case is all you need. its not a bag that is better for gigs, its a bastardization of the word "cheap shit".

The hardshell is all you need.

What store is this again?

Most stores that can 'toss in' a hardshell case when it is supposed to come with a cheap shit...excuse me, a 'gig bag'....also have the ability to not give you the gig bag and write it off somewhere else. Just speaking from my experiences. Good luck.
