Tascam portastudio 414 MKII help

Would anybody tell me how to use this? I have a Tascam portastudio 414 MKII and I don't know how to record anything with it. I messed with it like a year ago and recorded/played back stuff, but I have no idea how to do it anymore.
 
I have the manual and I've been looking through it, but haven't found anything in it to help me yet. I'll read some more.
 
Do you have a specific question. It is very difficult to answer a question like "how do I use this thing"
 
Sorry, I thought my question was too broad. I have all my things plugged in (drum machine + guitar through my amp) and it sounds all right to me when I'm playing and the machine is on. I just don't know if I have the right buttons pressed (L-R, Effect 1, and Effect 2/ Tape Cue) and the Effect 2/Tape Cue switch right. Becuase I'll record and then when I try to play it back, I can barely hear anything at all and it just doesn't seem right.
 
I haven't had a chance to get my machine out yet (I'm all computer based now), but take a look at page 7 in the manual, everything you need to know for signal routing is there. I'll try to give you an alternative explination a little later
 
there is a main monitor level for over all level of the headphones or what ever your using. Also there is an additional monitor level for each track that is shared with one of the effect returns. if you have the r-l or the tape cue selected in order to hear. You may just have the level down too low.

I wore out my first one and just got a second. There is a bit of a learning curve and I made some really bad recordings before i got the hang of it. But once you do figure it out you can make recording really quick. It's a sweet little machine
