Do you mean soundproofing or acoustic treatment?

Egg cartons will do nothing for soundproofing as sound is only afraid of mass.

iF you want to sound proof (limit sound traveling from your room to adjacent rooms) as Tukkis said, sound is only afraid of mass. in our personal studio we used a few layers of drywall. Its better than it was, but is by no means soundproof. also- around doors magnetic seals are common in studios- weather striping can reduce some rattle and stop some noise- no room is totally sound proof (unless you have concrete walls a few feet thick). Some design use a vestibule- a small room about 4'x4' - kinda like a submarine- this puts two doors instead of one between you and your adjacent space. Soundproofing involves construction.

Accostical treatment is an entirely differnt story- thats where your egg crates come in handy- they will reduce reverberations within the space- rule of thumb in recording- you can always ADD reverb to a recording- you cant really take it away

Actually, egg crates do very little for acoustic treatment either!

Acoustic foam, carpeting, drapes, hanging blankets, all will tame unwanted reflections.... but only in the upper mids and high-freq range... you need bass traps to handle the lows....

PLUS..... you don't want to deaden your room too much either -- a lifeless room will be terrible to mix in.......!
