I work in Voice Over but am relatively new to the home studio game. I've been using Twisted Wave for a while now and things sound pretty good. However, I feel like I'm missing the boat on some general mastering of audio. Many of the older "pros" are using more sophisticated software and I'm wondering if that's something I need to upgrade to. I've been told "Pro Tools is like hitting an ant with a sledgehammer" from a voice over perspective. I am definitely not a musician so it's just vocals for me.

I hear people talking about EQ'ing and running plugins as they master their voice over and that's where I'm lost. What would be a good upgrade for me software wise? I'm thinking Logic Pro X but am open to any suggestions.

Any thoughts?

Reaper will do all you want (and much more). Free to download and try it out, $60 to register. So try it!

I had never heard of Twisted Wave, but it looks like it does all the usual stuff one expects of an audio editor. When I was doing corporate voice recording I used Sound Forge, which is similar. It was more than adequate. Is there something specific you want to do that your software doesn't allow? If not then I don't see a good reason to change.

Fair enough. From what I can gather, most pros end up using more advanced software as they can master audio a bit better. I'm not 100% convinced I need a Logic or ProTools. The hardware I have is pretty decent but I'd like to be able to make sure I'm delivering audio that's mastered. I keep hearing about EQ and plugins to help with this. One pro suggested Logic has everything a VO pro would need. But, again, what the heck do I know. :)

Doesn't your software have basic processing tools like eq and compression? Better post production tools won't help if you don't know what to do with them. What you have should be adequate until your post production skills exceed the software's capabilities.

That said, there's nothing wrong with experimenting with something more sophisticated. Reaper would be a good program to try out.

+1 MJ, +1 Boulder
Reaper does everything I need. Twisted Wave gets lots of love from VO folks like George Whittam, et.al.. I can't speak pro/cons since I've never used it. Bought Reaper years ago, after TONS of research, and never looked back.
