I'll be expierimenting with this shortly, but I'll like to hear from you guys first. When mixing in OH's with the snare mic (sm57 in this case) how much OH vs close mic do you mix? Will there be phase problems?

Get the overhead mics up (with a kick mic) with no EQ and see how it sounds. Bring in the snare until it sounds fat enough and go! There's not much more than that other than making sure the kit is tuned well. There can be phase problems, but since you're using very few mics, its unlikely. Usually the problem happens when you have a polarity problem, or when you have some mics pointed up and some pointed down.

If you EQ, bring down the mid range (400-2khz) on the kick and emphasize the 4-6khz and 250hz down. For the snare you can add some 6-12khz for the upper end and some 600-800hz for punch. Try to leave the OHs alone unless they are cheap chinese mics that have the fuzzy high end. In that case roll off some of the 10khz. It may sound odd to you at first, but once you add other instruments, the highs stand out.
