I am interested in purchasing a pair of small condensor mics and am on a budget. I would like your thoughts or preferences on the following mics that I am considering: Octava MC012's, Rode NT5's or AT4041's. Which do you favor and why?

No experience with the Rodents. The Octavas are fantastic mics. If you go with these, do yourself a favor and get all the capsules and the attenuator for the mics (cardiod, hyper cardiod and omni). Lots of flexability and they sound great.
The 4041 is a great mic too. Very accurate sound.
I have no experience with the Marshall mics but I hear from knowledgealbe people that they sound very simaler to the Octavas in cardiod (they're a cardiod only pattern) and are very inexpensive. I'm sure someone will be along to tell you about them.

MK-012's

I have a pair of these (unmatched) and I think they're BRILLIANT...I've used them now for overheads, cymbals alone, speach, vocals, acoustic (both big and small body) and percussion and to me they're just the shit!...I would as I'm sure alot of people will recomend them...

Thank you both and anyone else who replies. I'm seriously considering the mc012's now. Now about Soundroom vs. Guitar Center. I'll tell you, GC's price is tempting, but I do want to make sure I get a good sounding pair, if not matched. Ideally, I would love to go to Soundroom to get a stereo matched pair but $199 vs. $424, c'mon! There's the quandry now.

Unmatched...

I got mine from GC while in L.A. doin' a pop festival....Never heard of Oktava before, but like you said the price and the reviews people gave me was too good to pass up....This was before I read the posts here on matched pairs....Mine are brilliant though....Like yourself, I'm on a budget so I just couldn't go the matched route even if I HAD known 'bout them...

...self-proclaimed "Most Trusted Oktava Reseller". I emailed the guy and asked what he did to "hand match" the mics. He said... "we hand match all of our MC012 bodies for output and match our cardioid capsules using a mic booth and a sine wave oscilator."

Given the choice, I'd go with the Sound Room because I've never heard of this outfit, but he's selling the "Matched Pairs" for $305! That's a lot less than the Sound Room.

He also sells all of the caps, including the LD cap.

It's truly a judgement call. I bought all my Octava's ( a pair of 012's and a 319) from Taylor Johnson at The Sound Room. It was worth it to me because I don't trust my ability to screen mics in a Guitar Center on an unfamilier system while a 16 year old kid shreads around the corner. I'd buy there again, for what it's worth.

I've been thinking about it, and the Sound Room really does seem like the right way to go because of it's reputation. I could probably sit it a mic room with a box full of 012's and a sine wave generator (read keyboard) too, but I doubt I'd come out with a properly matched pair :)

If the Ebay guy had a money back guarantee, I'd try him out, but he doesn't. Money challenges have put me into situations I've regretted all too many times before. It'll be another month before I can do it, but I'll sleep better that way.

Are pairs of mxl 603s consistant enough to make good pairs randomly?

I love my 012's (matched pair from sound room). I do think you should give a listen to MXL 603 as well. For overheads, either will work. I think the matched pair is a better choice for XY or spaced stereo micing. If you're just looking for overheads as part of a drum kit, random 012's or 603's *should* work nicely. If you need real stereo mics, as in remote or choir setups or X-Y on a guitar, get the matched pair, the nice cedar box, and pay the nice engineer for his work matching these mics. Either way, I'd go to GC and buy one 012, you can easily talk them to $99, and even if you don't have the pair, one 012 is a very useful mic.
Try the one 012 on acoustic guit, on the 12th fret, with an MK319 over the shoulder. That combo is lovely.-Richie

Just looking at the Musicians Friend web site...are the Marshall 603's and the Nady CM 90's the same mic?

They look ALMOST identical...and you can buy the Nady's WITHOUT having to buy a doorstop...uhhh...a Marshall 2001.

Well, since you're on a budget, I would concur with the Octava's.
I don't own the 603's. Need to get me a pair.

A little further up the ladder is the Shure SM81. I have a pair of these, and I like 'em a lot! I find I usually reach for these before the Octava's. They sound pretty good too.
