I bought a MDX2600 Composer Pro-XL Compressor the other day, I plugged my SM58 into it and I was getting very low playback volumes, low enough that I would have to normalize the recording, where as with other mics I would not have to. If I plugged my SM58 directly into my mixer there would be no problems, does this sound normal? Should I return the compressor?

sounds like you are not using a mic-preamp...

your chain should be like this:

SM58->mic-pre->compressor->soundcard

note, the behringer compressor does not have mic-pre in it.

Ok, Im not using a mic-pre. I wasnt aware that dynamic mics needed mic-pres. Thanks for the advice.

Is there a way to use the mic pres in my mixer (A mackie Dfx12) then link it to my compressor then back into the soundcard (audiophile 2496) through the mixer?

yeah sure, use the aux or another bus for that, no problem.

and by the way: ANY mic needs a preamp.
