I have a problem wid my knees, and im not able to stand up very long, so im forced to sit down and record, but am i mistaken hen i say i feel like i get mre energy and a better vibe standing up...is that usually the case? and if so is there nethign i can do or just i gotta try toget a vibe sittin down....nebody rercord sittin down?

and if not then why do they record standing up

I have recorded a few local rappers. Some of them sit and others stand. Some do both at different times of the session. I don't see any difference in their level of energy. To each his own. I see no reason why you can't rap with exposive energy while sitting down unless it is dependent on that fact that you are standing. With that said, I am suggesting it may be psychological. PEACE

Adapt and overcome...

Hey man... If you can't stand up you can do a couple of things to help promote good airflow, and maintain the level of energy you need to put out a good performance. Here are a couple suggestions.

1) Use a hardback chair so you don't get lazy and sit back in chill mode while you're recording (No lazy boys!)
2) Make sure you keep your back straight and chest up to help ensure you have proper breath support.
3) Sit on the edge or lip of the chair while you record. This will help you maintain your energy without getting winded due to lack of oxygen.
4) If you're feeling a little tired/lazy in the middle of the session, just do a little something to get the blood flowing in your body again... Weather it's sit-ups, a short walk, or curls... whatever you have to do to keep your body warm, and attentive. Don't be afraid to sweat. A warm body is a warm voice.

Hope this helps! Let us know the results...

yah it helps alot!! i use a bar stool type deal...for the reason that u said nick gm so i dont get lazy and can keep my back straight

I would recommend standing, I get the best takes when standing. I do all of my samples sitting down to get a rough draft of what it would sound like finished. But when you go to do it 100% standing allows you to get all into it. Its harder to mean what you say and use hand expressions and body movements to keep you in the beat when your sitting down.

Have you ever seen a serious Rap artist sitting down while recording?!

I doubt it. Everytime I watch 50, Wayne, T.I., Boosie, Fabolous etc. They are always standing and moving to the groove of the beat. I can't get a serious take sitting, Your knees can't be that bad. Try getting some Tri Flex with Sam E and or MSM from GNC. It's not to expensive and it does wonders for knees and shoulders. Trust me. Im a manager at GNC and a frequent user becuase of Knee and Rotary Cuff Pain.

Sorry that was so long

Words fail me.

Words fail you? Might be something you want to get checked out.

But if you know anything about recording a hip hop artist that is actually good you'd know getting into what you mean is more complicated sitting down. Theres nothing you can say that can make me believe different.

I don't think he was trying to make you think different but rather disappointed at your complete lack of empathy for a fellow human being...

Must be a rap thing...

First of all we're talking about rap here, not an opera singer. With that said, I don't believe the typical airflow/posture concept really holds much water -- as long as you're comfortable with sitting down. If you aren't, then your performance is never gonna be great, period.

If it sounds good, it is good.

I think the argument does hold water. Granted my technical knowledge as in the best way to capture a sound is nowhere near the level of some of you guys on here I feel I'm okay with coaching a rapper when I've been at other peoples studios working on a project. I may not know the best way to set my preamp up but I can tell when a rapper isn't breathing properly, is swaying all over the show, not projecting their words clearly etc etc. So I'd say the same principals you'd apply to a singer apply here.

Approaching this from a different angle. How bad are your knees? Seeing how most rap is 3 x 16 bars with a chorus and then some adlibs. Is it impossible for you to say nail the chorus rest your knees nail the verses rest your knees then go back and nail the adlibs. It'd require you to know your lyrics in and out (one of my pet hates with rappers  ) but you'd be talking a max of standing for a few minutes tops at any point in time.

It doesn't in this case. Capturing a good vocal take (or any instrument for that matter) is all about VIBE. If the performer isn't able to get in the "zone," then it'll sound like it.

In this case he might be halfway thru a verse and in pain.... How u think that take is gonna sound? How do you think the rest of the session is gonna go, if all hes thinkin about is how his knees hurt? If you think it'll sound great because hes standing with good posture, you're outta your mind.

To the OP, I think you're the only one who can answer this question. Can you HEAR a legitimate difference between sitting/standing takes? If so, which one SOUNDS better to YOU?

I dont think the point is whether sitting down or standing up gives you the best vocals..Id go with the latter imo, I like to stand up and try to belt it out...the OP was asking if any folks record sitting down...and many do..

I doubt the difference is so huge if its the way you are used to recording...but again thats just my opinion

I'd read you're original post as in because it was rap, good posture wasn't important. Kind of read that you were implying rap music is somewhat less of a talent/artform compared to other music. Apologies if I misinterpreted. I was just adding that it is important to have good posture and diction and projection just like you'd expect from any vocalist. Of course if he's worrying about his knees he's never going to be able to give a 110% to his performance so at the end of the day the old saying if it suits you then its ok fits perfectly here.

Lol DZK is garbage.... I used to work with DZK.... His aim s/n was burymoreemcees.... If u think he can outflow anyone ur a funny guy. I said professionals not amateurs who make songs about nothing on pacman beats. And everyone on soundclick is pretty much useless aside from Johnny Julianno, Vybez, And Superstar O.... There are some others but take note that the ones I mentioned only make beats.

Also I dont know why i sounded so angry in my previous post haha My Bad. But everyone is technically right it is all about getting a good take. If you can do it sitting down better then by all means do it sitting down. Whatever sounds better in the end to you! Good luck my friend.
