Singers - What happened to Phrasing

I spent a few minutes watching Idol last night and I couldn't help but wonder, what in the heck are some of these singers doing ?

Even those that were praised and got their"Golden Tcket" sang with no idea of musical phrase. It was all about jerking your melody all over the place in some sort of comical satire of a "Black Gospel" singer (That's a reference to genre - not race)

"I honestly --Big breath-- love you. I realy really --big breath- doooooooooo. You are my evvvvv --gargantuan breath-- rrrrryyyyyy thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnggggggg"

It all gets in the way of the performance in my estimation

I guess that makes it clear. Phrasing has become un-important in American Pop singing because you don't watch American Idol. Thanks so much for your well thought out reply.

So does the art of overall vocal technique!
On IDOL, too much fake vibrato, breath control, articulation and plain singing in tune are some of the basic points lost on many of the contestants on IDOL!

I like watching the early parts just to see the people they let through that really suck. I mean, they screen out hundreds, and let through only a couple o hundred, so they must be letting some of them through just to trash.

I just dont think that American Idol is the best way to become a famous singer- what happened to last years winner- I havent heard thier hit album- Im not knockin singers but Im stickin by my guns and sayin that AI is crap- I just got some Event monitors- but i guess that doesnt count huh?
