I know the sm85 has been discontinued & there is now an sm86. But I had a friend who had this extra sm85 & said I can use it to replace my MXL V63M because I'm looking to upgrade. I called around & was told that all I really needed was an interface with Phantom Power & I already had one for my last mic. I have a Mic Mate. I know it's cheap but it did the job. Everyone I've asked told me that this should be fine to use with the sm85. But everytime I record with it it's EXTREMELY quiet. It is working & the quality sounds decent but I have to turn it wayyy up to even hear it. I don't know if maybe the Mic Mate isn't a good match with it or what else it could be. If anybody knows any solutions please help. Thank you.

And if you were to plug an other microphone that requires phantom power into the SAME microphone cord and set up it is fine?
