Quick question...

Obviously shockmounts are used for micing vocals...but are they necessary for micing drums, amps, etc?

they're not really necessary for anything, more like an option that some will take advantage of, you know. I usually use them for drum OHs because drumset can get super load. Vocals, most use them, yes. The ideas is that the condensor should suspended rather than held, if that made sence, but ive used them without shocks and its been fine.

A lot depends on your room, and the stands you use, and the floor. If your floor vibrates with the bass or kick drum or even a passing truck, you may find it especially helpful to use a shockmount.

Shockmounts should be used whenever there's a likelihood that vibration will be transmitted through the microphone stand. Loud low frequencies are the worst offenders - as well as singers who like to touch or grab the mic stand.

If you're on a wooden floor and/or have low cost (low mass) mic stands, you'll be better off to use them on all your condenser mics.
