I have an SP B1.
Does it require a specific type of shockmount or something? Or do most shockmounts accomodate most all condenser microphones?

I also have an MXL603. Do small condensers like this require a different type of shockmount too?

Thanks.

Correctomundo. First, people will severely debate whether you can just use mic clips. When the dust settles, the concensus is that shock mounts are nice and helpful, but not always necessary.
I like them just because they provide some protection for the mic from falls or drumstick issues. Some shocks are versatile, such as AKG H-100, which works fine for the B-1 and the 603's, but they are a little pricey. You would probably do better to get one shock mount for the B-1, and a pair for the 603's. If you're not using the 603's as drum overheads, a couple of mic clips and a $10 stereo mic mount is all you need to start. The Chinese make a series of spring loaded shocks that will work fine for the B-1. It's just a matter of the right size- measure the mic. It will be about $20-$30.-Richie

Thanks Richard.

The metal pin that holds the mic clip together for the B1 worked itself loose a couple of months back. I walked by the boom stand and my jacket lightly brushed up against it and the clip unraveled. Causing the mic to fall several feet onto the concrete floor. Luckily the B1 still works fine (it had that big poofy windscreen on). But I snapped off a piece of the mic clip trying to put it back together.

I'm not averse to getting another mic clip as long as it's not as flakey as the original one. I just assumed that maybe a shockmount would be a safer way to go.

I don't mind using the mic clip that comes with the 603 (I just point it at my acoustic for recording), but I was hoping that if I did get a shockmount for the B1, it would be a bonus to be able to use it for the 603 also...as I only use one mic at a time while I'm tracking.

I still have some store credit at GC. Maybe they'll have something decent/low-cost there.

If it's the mic clip that came with the B1 email Alan or someone at PMI because they're usually, by all accounts, really decent about sending out new parts in cases like this. They'll probably send you a new clip with no trouble and if you offer them a few bucks you might be able to get a shockmount direct in the same package (cheaper P+P).

I'm not doing it to try and fiddle PMI, but from reading this forum Alan does tend to take a very customer-friendly approach!

could you tell us where you can buy those cheap chinese shockmounts?

Check Guitar Center for Rode shock mounts. There's a couple sizes, and one will fit the B-1, and a bunch of other mics. They're basically the same as the shocks that come with Studio Projects, MXL, or almost any Chinese mic. Small diaphragm mics are more difficult. I use Sabrasom shocks I got from The Sound Room. The stereo mount and both shocks cost a little, though, like $120 for the whole set. In the end, it was well worth it.-Richie
