Hi,

I have an AT4033 that I will be using for vocals and accoustic guitar. The 4033 has a bass roll-off feature - is it recommended to use this? I do have a relatively low voice. Also, for vocal recordings - should I be using a pop stopper and how far should the pop stopper be from the 4033 and how far should the singer's mouth me from the pop stopper? Sorry for all the questions, but I appreciate the help!!

It depends on the singer. Some are more enthusiastic in front of a mic than others. Some you can barely get a note out of them; the mic scares them that bad.

With some you have to practically pull it out of their mouth.

You'll just have to experiment with technique until you find what works for you. There is no magic formula.

You could start by selecting a level about half-way up on your pre-and then try different distances from the mic starting at about three inches and adjust accordingly. I mean your pre- settings and your distance.

Typical pop vocal sound is mouth 4-8" from the mic. Closer than that for intentionally exagerated proximity effect, farther for a thinner more distant sound, or for a classical belter. The pop screen can be anywhere between the mouth and the mic, doesn't matter if it's closer to one or the other.

The bass roll-off shouldn't affect vocals - the frequencies involved are usually too low. It may cut down on stand rumble, furnace noises, passing trucks, etc. - so it shouldn't hurt anything to use it. One less thing to deal with in the mix.

i also have a 4033 as my main vocal mic and i use the low cut always cause as little dog said it picks up a lot of outside noises and it will really pick up a 747 flying above.
