Just moved into the new house, it's still a wreck but I can have the front living room for the TV, computer, guitars and amps.

its a pretty old house with a fireplace on one wall and chimney breast above it. Computer/tv area will be on a shelf to the left of this. Was going to put the amp on a wooden shelf about 30cm off the floor to the right of this (handy space under it for leads/pedal board).

Should I mount the amp on something like neoprene to deaden it or will it be ok sitting straight on the wood shelf?

The room currently has carpet but has really nice wood block parquet flooring underneath. You think ill get to much room in the noise if I got back to the parquet? Could this be compensated for with a thick rug?

There'll also be two small sofas in the room and the guitars will be mounted on the wall adjacent to the amp.

Are you planning on recording, or just playing? Wood floor would be preferred, but bass traps will be needed in corners.

I wouldn't touch anything for recording until I first heard how the room sounded. Tracking and mixing are not the same. The room may have the sound you want. I would try it, work with mic positions, then listen to hear how it comes out before I do anything. You may like the sound of the untreated room.

Fair point actually. I do most of my mixing on headphones. At the moment it's just three bare walls a ceiling and a bay window. Going to take the carpet away and have wood block parquet flooring too. Think the room will feel loud and reverby. We'll see.

Probably be all sorts of samples that will sound like they were recorded down a well coming up in the new tone thread soon.

How big's the room? If the walls and ceiling are sheetrock (99% of most houses these days), then you are going to have a flutter echo thing going for sure.

Oriental rugs and runners are nice.

I'd at least get the amp away from the walls a bit.
