Hello! First post here, I'm hoping to get some clear info about setting up a small rig to record an acoustic drumset at home. Assume that, A) I don't know anything and B) I'm trying to keep this to a minimal budget.
I want to record my drums multi-track, but I'm not sure if there is a way I can do this with my current equipment, or if not, what exactly I will need. I am using the following right now:
*Dell Inspiron laptop running Windows 7 and Mixcraft 5 (with 2 USB and one line-in jack)
*Peavey PV-8 USB mixer
*Audix F15 overhead mics x2, Audix D6, Shure SM57
Unfortunately the mixer (which has four XLR inputs and 2 line inputs) mixes the signals down to one track before sending it to the computer. I have read about a technique where you plug into the inserts using a 1/4" stereo to 1/4" mono adapter to bring the signals about before the mixer mixes them down, but I don't know what I would then have to run them through before sending them to the computer.
So my question is basically what do I need to be able to multi-track record with what I have? If we're talking additional equipment my budget is $100 or less. If I need some kind of audio interface that would take the place of my mixer, which is new and returnable, then I have another $150-200 to work with. All I really want is something with four XLR inputs, but if I don't have the mixer then I think it would need preamps(?)
Is there something out there in the 300 range that would take the place of my mixer, allow me to multi-track record four tracks and feed it all through a USB 2.0 port??
Thanks in advance!
