I have know recording knowledge whatsoever but I do have the equipment so I'm trying to figure this all out now. Before recording I'm just fooling around seeing what works and everything.

Alright, I have a an amp coming out of the mixer. When I plug a stereo jack with a guitar or whatever else, I get sound coming just fine out the amp. But when I plug the mic (SM57) into the mixer I get no sound, no lights, nothing. Any thoughts?

Please explain in more detail exactly what equipment you are using (what mixer, what amp, what types of cables, etc.) and how you have it all connected.

The microphone needs to go into a microphone preamp. Most mixers have preamps built-in, but without knowing what mixer you're using, I can't know that. Ideally, you should be using a low-impedance (low-z) XLR microphone cable (three prong/connector at each end). Once connected to the preamp, you need to adjust the input gain (trim) on the mixer channel until you are getting signal coming through the mic into the mixer.

maybe you didnt adjust the gain on the channel that you plugged the mic into or it could be muted.

or you have your mic directly plugged into your line-in on your mixer.

Looks like that mixer has 4 preamps.

hm, alright so if that's the case what might the problem/solution be?

Well, you kind of have to troubleshoot this yourself, since we're not there and you are - like checking to make sure each piece of equipment is functioning properly (mic, cables, preamp/mixer, etc.).

looks like a broken cable.. check the solder connections.
