Sennheiser 421 as Kick Mic

I've read and seen them used for this application. Whats your mileage? My thing is that if its a good kick drum mic, I know it can also be used for toms, guitar cabs and even vocals. gee...plus, I've always wanted one (he said sheepishly). I like that bass rolloff switch and they seem like a great all round dynamic. Is it a great kick mic? If not, what do you like it for? Whisper in my ear and tell me why I need one!

You need one of these here mics because they're killer! That bass roll off is very nice and although subtle, it still helps dramatically! i have 4 of them and when I first put them on the drums, they kicked my ass (in a good way)! I've tried it in a bass drum but I didn't have any luck with it....not yet anyway.

It's great for just about everything on a drum kit except the kick.

You can make it work if you experiment enough, but I never had much luck with them. The RE-20 is much much better and easier to set-up on a kick. It's still a great mic, but kick drums are not its' forte.
