Is it possible to disable, turn-off, etc the SCMS function on a Philips CDR 770, 870, or CDRW760? If so, how do you do it?

Isn't the SCMS function the deal that makes you pay a lot more for CD-R discs, instead of using the cheapo 99 cent ones??

(I'm thinking of buying a used CDR770 for $200 cause I don't think I'll ever have the money for the Tascam CDRW700 that I would like to have..... any thoughts??)

As far as I know, the SCMS cannot be turned off on any of the "consumer" machines which includes all the Phillips and the Pioneers as well.SCMS stands for Serial Copy Management System, and it prevents more than one digital copy being made from a digital source. The issue of the consumer discs is a separate one.

I disabled the SCMS chip on my Tascam DA-30. It was quite simple. I just opened the unit, located the chip and cut one of the leads. However, Tascam supplied detailed instructions for doing so. It's quite possible you could do the same on your Phillips. Try e-mailing them.

Another thought.

If you use the anolog inputs, the SCMS is not invoked. It is only used if you are using the digital inputs.

Go for it mutt! I also bought a 770 dirt cheap and when using the analog inputs the SCMS function is disabled!
I even use the analog ins when copying c/d to c/d from another c/d player.

Thanks for all the replies - now something else I thought of:

1. There were a couple of mentions that using the analog ins the SCMS is off - does that mean you can use the real inexpensive CDR's to record to on the 770?

2. I'm coming out of a Tascam 546 digital 4 track that has a SPDIF output (which I think the 770 has a SPDIF input??)
Would I have to use the more expensive CDR's to go digital, and are those CDR's sold in Musicians' Friend??

(I'm trying to avoid buying a 770 just because it's a good deal, if I should be holding out for the $600 Tascam CDRW700)

Hey mutt,

With reference to your first question, I do beleive that regardless of which imput you use, you will still need to use the audio only cdr's.

With reference to your second question, the s/pdif inputs on the 770 are digital. If you use that input, you will be using the SCMS. In order to bypass that, you will need to use the rca inputs. Hopefully, your recorder has rca outs.

I also believe that you can get the audio cdr's at mf and other places. They are probably cheaper than your local Best Buy, just keep in mind that you will probably have to pay shipping. If I were you, I would spend some time shopping around.

Peace
Joe

Hey JC

Are the audio CDR's you're talking about listed in MF as CDR-DA's (for $1.99 each)? Does that sound about the right price?

Also, if I go to the Tascam and bypass the SCMS, can I use the regular type CDR's for 99cents each?
