Well, you know, some sources just seem to go together. I'm tracking mainly with NTK and
Studio Projects C-3, and no matter how many ways I do it, the pattern is the same. I'm using a Taylor 710CE with a Fishman Prefix Plus straight into a Joemeek twinQcs. I split the signal from the Fishman, so channel 1 is the onboard electret condenser, and channel 2 is the piezo transducer. I use the mic mostly, and add a little pickup for presence until it sounds (no shit) like a mic'd acoustic. Then I track vocals with NTK.
Plan B- Mic the acoustic with a coincedent pair of Oktava MC012's with
an Oktava MK319 over the shoulder, or with 1 012 in omni close on the 12th fret and a Behrenger ECM8000 close on the bridge, and track the vocals with C3. Invariably, the C3 wins if I'm using mics, and the NTK wins if I'm going DI. As far as my voice goes, it's very similar to Jonathon Edwards. You can draw your own conclusions about whether that's good or bad. The Bluesier and gutsier it gets, the more I like NTK. The cleaner it is, the more I like C3.
I'm not a techno-geek, so I won't try to dazzle you with mic-geek speak about hyped high ends and mid-range peaks, smoothness and accuracy. But I do know what goes together, and those combinations have been proven to work. I am somewhat hearing disabled, so the guide tracks are being run past several sets of good to great ears to verify what I'm hearing. Unfortunately, I have 90% hearing loss in the left ear, and 40% in the right, and can't hear anything higher than 7.5KHz. Therefore, I often have to track by the numbers, and I don't do any of the mixing myself. For that, I hire good ears.-Richie
