i would not reccomend it for rap vocals.

not at all...

i wouldn't neccessarily reccomend an LD condensor..but, someone else might disagree.

to me the NTK is kind of airy...don't think it would have the edge you need for rap.

check out a Shure SM7 dynamic...

I love my NTK, but I'm not a rapper. I agree with Wes.-Richie

richie -

my voice is kind of a smoothe baritone style...i like the NTK a lot on a lot of sources, but..never been crazy about how my vocals cut through with it...very airy...

just looking for a little info from other users...how would you describe the voices you like for the NTK? and how does it treat them..

I like every voice on it. The only exception is sometimes I find myself singing into a Beta58 for my own voice. But I just don't like my voice, and sometimes the NTK is way too revealing. In general, I feel like it works pretty well with most everything though. Super-sibilant voices may need some post de-essing, but that's gonna happen with most any mic. I feel like it definitely mellows out somewhat strident or sharp voices. Also, it works great for low to midrange female voices, but I haven't used it on any really high voices to make a firm judgement. It's definitely got air, but I don't see why you couldn't use it for rap too.

Well, you know, some sources just seem to go together. I'm tracking mainly with NTK and Studio Projects C-3, and no matter how many ways I do it, the pattern is the same. I'm using a Taylor 710CE with a Fishman Prefix Plus straight into a Joemeek twinQcs. I split the signal from the Fishman, so channel 1 is the onboard electret condenser, and channel 2 is the piezo transducer. I use the mic mostly, and add a little pickup for presence until it sounds (no shit) like a mic'd acoustic. Then I track vocals with NTK.
Plan B- Mic the acoustic with a coincedent pair of Oktava MC012's with an Oktava MK319 over the shoulder, or with 1 012 in omni close on the 12th fret and a Behrenger ECM8000 close on the bridge, and track the vocals with C3. Invariably, the C3 wins if I'm using mics, and the NTK wins if I'm going DI. As far as my voice goes, it's very similar to Jonathon Edwards. You can draw your own conclusions about whether that's good or bad. The Bluesier and gutsier it gets, the more I like NTK. The cleaner it is, the more I like C3.
I'm not a techno-geek, so I won't try to dazzle you with mic-geek speak about hyped high ends and mid-range peaks, smoothness and accuracy. But I do know what goes together, and those combinations have been proven to work. I am somewhat hearing disabled, so the guide tracks are being run past several sets of good to great ears to verify what I'm hearing. Unfortunately, I have 90% hearing loss in the left ear, and 40% in the right, and can't hear anything higher than 7.5KHz. Therefore, I often have to track by the numbers, and I don't do any of the mixing myself. For that, I hire good ears.-Richie
