ribbons on percussion?

i've read all about using the ecm8000's on percussion, and i have a pair, but i'm looking to record something that is maybe NOT so accurate -- like a darker, blurrier sound.

i'm planning on recording a cabasa and a guiro, neither of which should hurt a ribbon mic i wouldn't think (i've got an m160 and 260 at my disposal).

or should i head for a large condenser or maybe a 4033?

Then ribbon mics would be a nice choice. You might also want to look at using a real tube preamp (something like a VMP2 or better).

A ribbon will be darker, as they have an inherant steep roll-off at high frequencies; but it will be very accurate, as transient response is very good. Try a large diaphragm DYNAMIC, like an EV RE20.

try a harmonica mic. I heard a drumkit mic'd with one and it sounded very cool, much like what youre describing.
