Bassist sound a little odd to me, I'm not that good. Jaco was a bassist; I'm a bass player.

As long as the intentions are good It has never really mattered to me. I did have a guitarist once that said " your just a bass player man, turn it down, it doesnt really matter if you can`t hear your bass good onstage". hehehe, when it came time for his solo I let him play without ANY bass.. I later asked him if he still felt the same way. From then on things went well...

lol..NICE! There are way too many guitarists who just do not understand how fundamental the bass is to the sound. Our bass player couldn't make it to practice last night and won't be at our next gig, and as the electric guitarist I'm scrambling to try and fill in some of the missing sound.

Actually I like being called a bass guitarist.

Some guitar players can be quite condescending when it comes to the role of bass. It shows a fundamental ignorance of their role and the role of the bass instrument. I bet a lot of these guys ragging on bass players are usually aping the bass by playing root power chords most of the time anyway!

Agreed.

Some bass players show the same ignorance of those roles in their playing. <cough>Billy Sheehan</cough>.

Their is nothing I respect more than a bass player that stays in the pocket and lays down a booty-shakin', undeniable, rock steady groove.

A

Toki987, great story.

I have always played with guitarists who doubled on bass, or bass players who doubled on guitar, or whatever....Anyhow never any lack of respect. Maybe the guys who are inexperienced do that.

Me, I play guitar/dobro/bass/pedal steel....

I have never cared one way or the other about what you call me.
Just make sure you spell my name right on the check. :D

All kidding aside, I never really had to work with a guitar player that didn't think the bass was important. Most of the guys I've worked with understand that to make basic rock music you need everyone to contribute to the overall sound. Every instrument is equally important.

At the end of the day the only important thing is that my drummer loves me.

That was exactly the case, in particular.

Absolutely! Ignorance, or just plain hypocrisy, are equal opportunity afflictions. :)

I've always called them bassists. But some of them I refer to as musicians just cause their so good at everything.

it's a bass guitar so as far as i'm concerned we're all guitarists : tenor, alt, baritone and bass.

But many of us also play bass violin . . .

Bass player is easier to say than bassist.
No bass, no music. As a guitar player I totally rely on the bass, all the time.

Completely with you on that!

i prefer "lead bass entertainer" just to keep those damned lead singers on their toes. You really cant have a week link when it come to playing music. I still believe that the most important member of the band is the drummer.

but what good is a drummer without everyone else? what good is anybody without anyone else?

To me, a bassist is someone with a formal music education that can play a double bass, read/write notation, etc.

I am a bass player, someone that is mostly self taught, sticks with an electric bass, etc.
