Recording, Wave,PCM

1. What is the difference between Wave and PCM files, both in recording and playback ?
2. Is there any difference in recording audio to a DVD(which can hold 7 hours), or to a CD. I am thinking of transferring vinyl to CD/DVD, besides indexing there is a great space advantage of transferring to DVD, as most players will play both CD's and DVD's.
Any comments are appreciated.

The only neg. thing about all your music on dvd is all of your eggs are in one basket so to speak. Disc can be bad after recorded. Maybe store on dvd but also have each album on its one cd. That way you dont loose all on disc.

I would say that wave is usually a PCM encoded file, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulse-code_modulation
and

In fact, there are no PCM files, there are just files with the signal stored in PCM.
