Recording Question

I am getting into recording rap for fun, not looking to blow up or anything like that. I have been trying to get the right equipment, already have the right space, so I just wanted a little help. I chose a mic and preamp already, but I am unsure as to whether I need a sound card too. Does the preamp bypass that need or not? If it doesn’t then can someone recommend a good external sound card to go with what I have chosen? I picked out a NT1-A Condensor Mic and a Studio Projects VTB-1 Preamp. Also what cables would I need to connect everything, the mic comes with a XLR cable? Thanks for any help you guys can offer!

What you need is a microphone and an audio interface.

Most audio interfaces will cover all the jobs that your sound card and preamp do, but in one box.
Take a look at the usb/firewire options from tascam, focusrite and presonus to get you started.
 
I was looking at the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 In/2 Out USB Recording audio Interface. It seems highly recommended and I think it should work. If I were to get that, would I need a soundcard or does that handle that too? Also does the NT1-A work with that audio interface or do only usb mics? Would I need any additional cables? Sorry for all the questions, but I just want to get this right.

The 2i2 'will' be your soundcard. That is what an interface does, is in effect replace the internal one in your computer. Plus adds a bunch of options.

The NT1A is a condenser mic that needs phantom power. The 2i2 has that. Just a XLR mic cable needeed. Not sure, but I think my NT1A came with one. I don't recall for sure.

Now, whether that mic is suited to your voice or room you are recording in, is for you to decide. If you are recording in a small (untreated) room, a dynamic mic might be better. None of us can answer that for you really.

No problem man! Actually, now that I think about it. My Rode did come with a mic cable. I know because it has a velcro cord wrap with 'RODE' printed on it.
 
The Scarlet 2i2 is a good choice to start with (and even possibly more). Don't expect things to work well without having to go through a pretty significant learning process though. There is more to this than just pressing the record button.
