yeah, I'm a noob.

I just wanted to know what program I should get to record vocals over beats.

there are many to choose from...and most of them are pretty equal. The big 3 are Pro Tools, Cubase, and Sonar. But if money is an issue, Id recommend Mackie Tracktion 2 -- its only $150, compared to around $500 for the others. To be honest, the recording software doesnt matter as long as the effect plugins you use with it are up to snuff...but thats neither here nor there -- since you dont have a recording program yet... Just dont be one of those people that run out and buy PRO TOOLS just because they hear "its the standard." Just my 2 cents.

what you said is true but you forgot Waves Logic 7. jumping on the pro-tools bandwagon isn't a bad idea if you take in the fact that M-box is only like $499.00 which comes with a soundcard/midi interface and the new M Box 2 doesn't have those horrible latency issues as M Box 1 BUT you only get the real power of Pro Tools in it's HD series.

this dude isn't trying to spend any cash.
hes looking for free downloadable programs at the moment.

nah i wouldn't mind dropping some cash on a good program.

i'm just clueless when it comes to this type of thing, so I had to ask.

Pro Tools is what we use. But, Pro Tools takes a little longer to learn then the other programs. If you ever used Cubase, Logic, Digital Performer, or Acid, you should have no problem learning Pro tools fast. But, if you never used those other programs, it might take you a minute to learn everything.

I would recomend Pro Tools because all major studios use it. And it's the "Indusrty Standard" for major labels. Logic is getting up there with Pro Tools. Logic has better midi function. Just try to see what you want to do. If you want to also make beats, Logic is better midi wise. Otherwise you can get Pro Tools and Reason.

What kind of computer do you have. I recommend at least a 1000Mhz processor. Those plug-ins can really eat up CPU processing... If you are going to run Reason and Pro Tools at once, you need 2000Mhz to 3000Mhz. I have a dual 2000Mhz Apple G5 and I still run out of CPU processing at times...

If you can't effort an upgrade, just bounce your beats to stereo and import it into Pro Tools. You can always mix your beats later.

I use Cubase SX and Reason. I always import my beats into Cubase as a stereo wav and then record my vocals in mono. Like BeatsBuy said, you can always remix the beat later.

I used Cubase SX2 for a while(bout to start recording on a multi track recorder now)..but you can record vocal with N-Track..real simple cheap program that lets you use plug-ins like any other program..I still use it ever once in awhile...

it got what I needed done at the time..a few years back

also go check out http://www.hitsquad.com and check out the demo program of alot that have be mentioned here
