recording CD tracks

I have Cool Edit 2000 and have used it previously to record from my computer's CD. I have a new computer and I can't seem to make recordings. The CD plays, I hear it, the recorder seems to turn "on," but no "waves" appear and no recording is made. What am I doing wrong?

Make sure you have the correct recording source selection made in the windows mixer (or whatever mixer your soundcard uses). Even better, rip the CD with EAC or CDex, which gives pristine quality at high speed.

Rip it from the CD. No sense in recording the audio in real time, you'll lose quality that way.
