Are there any tips on getting the heaviest distortion sound out of a 1x12 Peavey MX tube amp onto a PC recording (Cakewalk Pro Audio 9) --- such as placement of mic(s), and EQs, Compression, or little secrets you guys might know about...

This one is easy,,,,, Get the exact tone you want from the amp, slap a SM57 in front of it into a decent micpre-converter-HD and doubletrack it.
If that doesn`t give you what you want, no mic/micpre/compressor/eq can help you, the tone HAS to come from the amp. Do NOT eq,it`s going to give you phase hell when mixing.......

close in off center 57. EQ at the amp if needed. I'd try 3 to 4 inches off center to start and about 3 inches from the grill.
no reverb!!

crank up the amp. i get the best guitar tracks when the amp is blasting (so loud that the police came to my house).
