Recording a Mariachi

I am working on a Mariachi project for a Singer,We do all the Music with Sampletank but we will be Replacing MIDI Instruments for Real Instruments.

I Record Nylon Acoustic yesterday using My AKG C3000b at the 12 Fret,And a Pair of MXL603s one below the Bridge and one on the Fretboard Thru my UX8 (The AKG With the Neve Model and the Pair of 603's with the Factory Pres of the UX8)

Sound Results was OK with the exception that the MXL was a little Hissy. I used a Waves Plug in to remove the Hiss.And it helps a little.

My question is: I'll be recording Trumpet And Violin the next Week.Any Suggestions? Whic mic i should Use,I was thinking to use my SM7 or buy a SM57,or KSM32 for Trumpet.And i Don't know what mic to use with Violin.Below is my Small Collection.

The KSM32 is great on brass and strings.

I'm very confused, David. Why would you use an AKG C3000B on *anything*, when you have a 4050, an NTK, and a Baby Bottle? Those are all better mics than a 3000B on a nylon string guitar than a 3000B. That said, SM7 will work just fine on trumpet, and on strings, I'd use the 4050 or the Baby Bottle, and back it off a little to reduce bow scratch.
And- you don't need more mics, at least not now. You need to learn to use the ones you have. And frankly, if I owned your mic cabinet, I would sell those 3000B's in a heartbeat and upgrade the 603's to AKG C2000B's or C451's, Rode NT5's, Shure SM81's, Josephson C42's or whatever. Thanks Richard.Being Honest I just purchased the C3000b two days ago and i was testing it, that's why and beleive me it doesn't sounds bad at all,I am thinking to sell it or trade it for the c2000b Tough.I recorded a Nylon Solo with the 4050 And Sounds Much Better.

the C3000b's strength is acoustic guitar...Im not that sure why its still made seeing as how Ive never heard a nice thing about it.

I think that it has been Out of the Market because i just saw it 2 days ago on sweerwater for $429.99 and right now didn't show up anymore on that site.

You are Right Richard C3000b Sucks on Nylon Acoustic,I was relistening again and it captured the Attack of the right hand too Much and it was Noisy
I recordered the same tracks with the 4050 on the 12th fret and the 603's one on the Fretboard and the other near the Bridge and WOW!A very Smoooth and Warm Sound.
C3000b was sold and i used the Money for a pair of 57's and Mic Stands.I am planning to buy a Cascade Fat Head soon to record Trumpets.

Yo David! That's why no one except a few realized the C2000B was a basically good cheap mic. They figured if a 3000 sucked for $300, a 2000 for $200 must suck *more*and almost nobody bought it. It was an acoustic success, but a marketing failure, which makes it a buyer's market. That's good, unless you are trying to sell one. I won't be selling mine anytime soon. But- they are completely different animals. The 2000B has some color to it, not unlike the Oktava MC012. The 2000's wouldn't be my first choice on a really expensive classic played by a master in a good room, but it would probably make a half drunk Mariachi with a cheap guitar in the plaza sound great. Note that its color doesn't come from hype- The 2000's frequency curve is ruler flat from 100Hz to 6000kHz, with a gentle bump peaking at 10K, and that's only a 2db boost! It simply produces some subtle distortion which tends to airbrush certain sources a little, which can be flattering when used at the right time and place.
If I don't want to hide anything, I use Neumann KM184's and a C414. Your NTK does the same thing, which works for a lot of singers. Mics like the U47 tube mic are prized for the very cool distortion/color they produce. Sometimes you want accuracy, sometimes not. I almost never want hyped anything. But- Just because the mic is flat doesn't mean I always want it to tell the whole truth. -Richie
