My daughter needs to record her violin songs to submit to her teacher. In the past we have done this on a cassette tape. This year I want to record it on to the computer and burn a CD. Can you give me directions on how to do this and what I might need or help me find a website that can walk me through it? Thanks.

In general terms you will need:

1) Some sort of microphone
2) Some sort of microphone stand, probably with a boom arm
3) A Mic cable
4) A mic preamp (or small mixer with mic preamp included)
5) A sound card with A/D converters for your computer
6) Recording software
7) CD Burning Software
8) CD Burner

If you don't have most of these already, you are obviously looking at spending some money. How much depends on the quality of each of the above - obviously more money usually buys better quality.

So unless you are planning on doing this a lot, it may end up a whole lot cheaper (and easier) just to go to your neighborhood project studio, some of which may only charge you $25 an hour for the use of their equipment (which even in the smallest studio will probably be a higher quality than you would probably buy) and their expertise (not an unimportant commodity!)
