I'm looking for recommendations for the right way to do multi-track recording (4 or more) into an Intel based computer. The recommendation should include the right interface card and software.

I'm thinking about a hardware card that accepts LINE level inputs from mixing consoles or mic preamps. I have Rane pro audio microphone preamps (MLM series), but do not have a mixing console.

I own a computer firm, so PC hardware and skills are not an issue. I want a recommendation that will allow me to record multi-mic'ed live bands into 1 track per musician, onto a PC at the venue. Multiple mic instruments (drums, congas) will be balanced with a Rane preamp, and the resulting single LINE will be the drums track, conga track, etc. Guitar, horns, keys will be mic'ed, and the bass will be DI.

I'd like to buy something that will do the job for awhile, and not be prone to being out grown in a short time. I'd prefer to buy it once, and buy it right.

Last, do I need a mixing console, or can this all be done in the computer. Cakewalk, Sonar, ???

Thanks in advance,

Bruce Gavin

A mixer is always nice to have around. You will probably need a card/interface with plenty of ins and outs.
Perhaps the Delta 1010. Or you can stack em for 20 ins.
Software comes bundled with a lot of cards but might not always be what you like. Try some downloads of demos to find what you like before you buy. Sonar is pretty popular. I use Logic myself but it takes a while to learn it well.

PC...

P4 2.4gig is well priced right now. Or splurge and get the latest. I have used ASUS boards for years with no problems.
2 HD's...one for audio.
Keep it cool with good quite fans. I like the little HD fans that attach under the drives. Pretty slick. If you got the dough, do the water cooler system.
Put as much Ram in as you like.
Nice CD writer.

I'm trying to get a line on which cards are desirable, and which are junk. I've seen the Delta 1010 mentioned, but have no idea. I want to be sure and go with the 'mainstream' PCI card.

I figure I have to have 8 inputs for my needs. I have the computer portion down pat, but not the recording stuff.

I'm searching for specific model/brand recommendations, and the experiences (good/bad) one has with them.

There are dozens of cards out there and many people here have used one of em and sware by them (as long as there working)
I can always feel comfortable recommending the M-audio cards.
They have a good card consumer friendly too.
The 1010 should be up your alley.
And I can also say RME Multiface with pride.
And with out a doubt Lynx cards. but limited I/O

The 1010 is a "mixer" type card.

I'm looking for an 8-channel XLR balanced in card. I guess I'm searching for the hardware/software that lets me use the computer as an ADAT.

You can get a Tascam DM-24 board (16 IN / 24 OUT), and a MOTU 2408 mkIII (24IN / 24 OUT).

Okay. Now this configuration will give you options and room to grow. :)

The Tascam DM-24board will give you 16 XLR INS or 16 1/4" INS.

The DM-24 will then send 24 tracks Bi-directional (to and from) your computer via TDIF (digitally).

Actually the DM-24 will send them OUT to the MOTU 2408, then the 2408 will send them to your computer via FIREWIRE (and viceversa). ;)

The 2408 will give you 24 TDIF IN or 24 ADAT optical IN and 8 1/4" IN.

The AD/DA converters are pretty solid, so you'll get a nice sound ( you could always put another piece on the front for an even more stellar recording).

Peace...

And if you still decide to go the Delta 1010 route, then you can get adapters for the 1/4" INS (to make them accept XLR). ;)
