HI there.
I am currently working at a University in the Midwest
and I was asked my opinion on what MIcs could they use in a 4000 Sq foot recital hall to do just basic 2 track recordings, all styles of music and instruments will be used, they prefere to have them mounted in the celing and hanging, any input would be helpful. also cost should be around 300$ for the pair.
Thank You

I also work for a University, but I am in Georgia. I have had good results with AKG C3000b's but even better results with mxl603's believe it or not. I would say go with a wide cardoid small condensor. Look at the mxl603s and the oktava mc012 with the cardoid capsule. Both of these mics can be found at 8thtreet or musiciansfriend.

If I can, I'll post a clip of something for you to listen to that was done with the mxl603's this weekend. I have to do some work this weekend anyway.

Go straight to The Sound Room and pay about $424 for a matched cardioid pair of MC012's. Or better yet, ask them what part of "concert hall" they didn't get, and get the cheap bums to shell out for a pair of Neumann KM184's or AKG C451B's (the matched pair is $895.00 at eighth street). You get what you pay for, and $300 is not a place to start to record symphony hall.-Richie
