I am starting a studio in my room and I have a few questions.

First. My studio consists of:

-Custom Built Computer w/ Windows XP Pro,AMD Athon 1.6 gHz, 512 Megs of DDR RAM, A 20 gig Western Digital Hard Drive at 5200 rpms and a 80 gig Westen Digital Harddrive at 7200 rpms. ATI Radeon 7500 All In Wonder.

-Logic 5

-Delta 44 w/breakout box

-Shure SM 57, MXL 2003 Condenser

-PreSonus Bluetube

I only got the Delta 44 because Ill never need more than4 inputs at once because I dont have room to record drums.

my question is...

If my computer fan is slighly loud... do you think it will show up in a recording with the MXL 2003?

I havent got to try it yet, I have to go pick all the gear up at guitar center.

If it will show up in a recording, what should I do?

You could get a fan speed controller for the computer.
Other options would be .... move the PC into a closet or get ya some compressed fiberglass ceiling tiles and make a box around the PC.

Not to bad .... the thicker the better ..... maybe $10 US for a 2'x4' tile.
They may even be cheaper than that depending on the store. I'm just guessing on the price. Check out your local Hardware Store.

If you do fashion up an enclosure with the tiles .... only put it over the PC when sound control is needed ..... Don't leave it on there all the time.
You don't want to overheat the PC .... Chances are you won't but.... just to be safe. It should be no problem covering it up for a 10 - 15 minute recording session.
You can also make use of hanging some heavy blankets around you while recording for some cheap iso.

I was worried I would have the same problem in my room (recording onto PC with some Rode NT's through an Aardvark Q10). I found, though, that unless you're trying to pick up ambient sound by jacking up the gain and backing off of the mic, you won't pick up any fan noise. At worst, you might pick it up but it will be completely inaudible under whatever you're recording.

Make sense?

Peter
