Hey all,

I've just bought an MBox2 off of somebody that hasn't been registered yet.
The thing is, it came with Protools 6.8something/6.9.

Today I went to my local music shop, and the guy there said that I should register the product, and I'll get a CD with the update from Digidesign (he also mentioned nobody had come back after that same advice)...

On the digidesign website it says an update costs 75 euros though.

So my question is: did anybody here update to a 7 version, and how?

Thnx in advance

I updated to v.7 and I love it. Its not that significantly better than 6.9 if you have an older machine, but it does have more features that make it worth the upgrade if you have a fairly robust machine. My performance on an older G4 powerbook went down a little with v.7, but I mix analog most of the time so I don't care that much. Its a BIG upgrade with lots of improvements and whatnot, but it doesn't really change how you use the program all that much. Hell, we still use 6.4 at work and I don't really notice that much difference in how the thing works.

You may or may not be able to register that used Mbox2 with Digi without a store receipt. Or you may be able to register it but not be able to get the free upgrade. You'll have to double check with Digidesign about that.

I'd use 6.9 and see how you like it. Then read up on the new features of v.7 and see if its worth the coin to upgrade.

Take care,
Chris

I have an 1.8 G5 Imac...

I've heard the midi stuff is better in V7...

did you pay for your update?

aah..someone from the forums!

what's your take on the "paying" part?

I did pay for the update, now that I think about it. Twice.

I got some $1200 worth of plugins (no longer offered, if I recall correctly) for about $200. I thought it was a good deal. :D

I don't use the midi functions of PT much anymore, though I'm glad they are updating the MIDI capabilities because they DO come in handy. I actually bought the update to a) stay up to date and b) score the extra plugs for a song.

I guess I'm just not a power user of the software side of things. Pretty much any program would work for audio... if you aren't sure about spilling the cash for it then its probably a sign to wait. Digi will always accept your cash later should you change your mind. ;)

Take care,
Chris

what's the price now? $75USD?...if you like what the extra features are saying, then go for it. I personally can't upgrade, but if I could I would. Just because it'd be nice to have some of the features they're offering.

and all this, knowing I switched to protools+mac to get rid of all the BS :D

well, no one forces you to upgrade. We only do it out of greed ;) :)

Welcome to the realm of endless minor updates...

I love Mac OS and I *love* that I don't need antivirus software and all that extra crap running- and that its easier to maintain than my PC...

And I don't bother upgrading everytime a new .x increment of whatever comes out. Screw it. If it ain't broke don't fix it. As I said earlier, I only grabbed this update to score the cheap plugs. Haven't regretted it for a moment.

Take care,
Chris
