...I just got my b day present to myself; Martys 99 secret lead guitar phrases and I like it alot.

At the begining, he makes a music/speech analogy as the premise of the dvd. Guitar phrases and licks are words. Theory, mode, et al are grammar.

The point being if you're learning a new launguage you can get somewhere sooner with a larger vocabulary, even if the grammar is incorrect, than a limited vocabulary with proper punctuation.

The goal is that these 99 phrases are a bunch of new words to expand your vocabulary and perhaps get you out of a rut.

From there he dives right into 99 licks. Plays them normal, then twice slowed down looking at the fingering then twice slow looking at the picking. Then on to the next one.

The last thing Marty will ever be labeled is as a straight ahead pentatonic lead player and you get a strong flavor here of where he's coming from. These ain't rock licks or blues licks or jazz licks per se; they're Marty licks.

It got me going in no time and threw me out of the lead creativity rut, so, Marty, mission accomplished.

I don't know if hot shots are gonna be all that impressed because there wasn't anything on there jaw dropping or that I couldn't play, but, for intermediates, which I consider myself, or if you just want a fresh look at the fret board, then, you'll learn a bunch of cool and nasty words on guitar pretty quick.
