I have 2 marshall Plexi reissues: 1959HW and 1987X. At first I didnt like them, I had tried them at GC but couldnt get my sound. I have had a Marshall 2204 since 1989. I couldnt get use to the non master volume. The only reason I bought them was they had an end of year closeout sale. I got the 1987X for $499 and the 1959HW for $1200. I was thinking of reselling them in my shop. I got intrigued by all the hoopla about plexis so I tried them out. The only way I can set them to sound good to me and what I was used to was to bridge the inputs and blend the 2 channels. It is a little complicated but I now appreciate the Plexi sound. It turns out I dont really like super high gain amps. I can get all the gain I want from my Vox ToneLab pedal board. I found the treble channel was too thin and earsplitting. The normal channel was too dull. I wondered what they expected players to do with the settings back then because I had to bridge the inputs to be happy. Well I play both in stereo through the Vox and love the sound, it is smooth and punchy without the compressed muddiness of the 2204 and other high gain amps. What do any of you Plexi owners do with the settings? What do you think of them compared to modern amps?
