I'd like to order a pair of Marshall MXL 603S. So my question is... where is the best/cheapest place to order them from?

Also, I already have a pair of Oktava MK012's... but, I'm curious how the MXL 603S compares with the Oktava MK012?

Thanks.

"Marshall MXL-603 $99 This was a flat-out winner, folks. Almost identical to the MC012 in sound, with a wide cardioid pattern, almost approaching omni. We used them as drum overhead mics, and they did a great job. The diaphragms are easy to bottom out on voice, but with a pop filter (and positioned above the singer's mouth), they wouldn't be bad as a vocal mic on some singers, and they'd probably do fine on acoustic guitar, and many other instruments. They were also a perfect match to the Oktava MC012 - they sounded nearly identical. "

After owning both for a while now, I don't think they sound as identical as does Harvey.

The mc012's are fairly transparent to my ears, while the 603s have more of a unique sound. They almost sound somewhat "boxy," if that makes any sense. Anyway, I actually prefer that sound on accoustic guitars, and particularly on mandolin. It accentuates the wood of the instrument.

Wow, that was a great thread... good reading, thanks.

Now, I need to know where is the best/cheapest place to order the pair of Marshall MXL 603S from?

This website rocks... I'd like to hangout with that Harvey dude... but, I'd most likely drive him nuts because I'd be like a sponge or like the in that movie where the robot #9 said "Input, feed me input"... lol.

Thanks again.

I just ordered two priced at 159.95 with two free '25 XLR cables. This deal is at www.8thstreet.com If you find them cheaper please let me know for the 30 low price gurantee.

Music123 will beat 8th Street's price. They come out to $81.94 WITH shipping. The shipping is way cheaper than 8th Street's (unless you want to spend $179 or whatever to get free shipping.)

theletterq is right about music123.com.DJL. I forgot about figuring in the shipping part.Because I was already ordering the AW16G from music123 I went and had them add and price match the two mxl603s with the free mic cables on 8thstreet.com. Of course I was already into the free shipping buy getting the AW16G.I have found recently that music123 will really work hard for your business. They hooked me up with the sweetest deal on my items.

Yeah, me too. I've been using Music123 for pretty much everything lately (using price beating). What I like is that if you don't order enough to get the free shipping, they don't have high, over-inflated shipping costs. I also get my items super fast. Ordered my 603's on Sun and had them on Wed using regular ground shipping. :)

After owning both for a while now, I don't think they sound as identical as does Harvey.
I completely agree with you, Chess. I found it easier to distinguish my Oktava 012 and my MXL 603 than I did to distinguish between my MXL V67 and my Rode NTK.

BTW, and I know Chessrock is going to hate that I'm mentioning this, but the best price on the 603 is from musiciansadvocate.com. They'll ship one to you for $70.

Thanks for the help everyone. I called 8th Street's 800 number this afternoon at about 4:30 PM PST but, they were closed... so I left a message with my name and phone #. Also on 8th Street's webpage it says FREE shipping... no? I'll call Music123, 8th Street and musiciansadvocate.com monday morning and see who wants my business the most... lol. Thanks again everyone.

I had bought my MXL 603s on eBay. I can't remember who from, but it was somebody out of New York. It was new...I paid something like $79 for mine. Occasionally, I see them go for less. Great for acoustics. I've been singing through mine lately...backup vocals. I don't get anywhere near the mic....6 inches away suffice... It does sound good on vocals, but also pics up too much around the room for that use. It does work great for drum overheads, though.

Thanks tntkemp,

I have a lot of mics (SDC's, LDC's, dynamic's, tube, etc)... and I'd be surprised if I'd picked a MXL 603S over the other choices I have for vox... however, I've been surprised before... lol. Anyway, thanks again. I've got to go... I have a date with my pillow.... lol. I"ll catch you all later. DJL
