Peavey Electronics on undercover boss = Ouch!

Oh yeah...
I forgot to include that I played a gig with that system where the building wiring was awful...lights were dimming and there was all kinds of noise coming through the pa. I had a Alexis power amp running my monitors and a compressor (can't remember the name brand). The screwed up house wiring fried the Alexis amp and the compresser....the peavey stuff took the locking and kept on ticking!

Late 60's, early 70's, we used a bunch of Peavey products.

Mainly, PAs and amps.

Solid and heavy, roadworthy.

"Is the new peavey stuff good?
I don't know....I'm still using to same old peavey stuff I've had for 30 years."

Yes, same here.

Just sold a pair of their 15" PA speakers last year.

They were built around 1971, and still kicking with the original speakers and horns.:guitar:

I read an article on him once, a kid who gave up playing and actually built stuff by hand and on his own, so I gotta respect that effort.

Turning into a old CEO, business and money probably sucks...maybes he's turned into a robot money zombie?

Ive read that before, getting bigger and bigger isnt always fun and satisfying.
I think of it like raising kids and having one, maybe two...but having 16 would probably cause a lot of cutbacks and everyone doing less, or everyone bringing in a bunch of money. ...

eventually, its like a big elephant taking a dump.

( i added the elephant comment as humor, it really has nothing to do with Hartley Peavey)

he used to come thru Baton Rouge selling his amps from the back of his pickup to a few local stores. Kenny Gills was a store I worked at and hung around and Kenny would buy some of his earliest amps.
This was back when Kustom was a major brand and Mosrites still walked the Earth.

Then he and his wife made it into a big company without issuing stock so they didn't relinquish control to investors.
A great company at that time regardless of whether you liked their amps or not. Their bass amps were very common back then ..... the Dyna Bass I think they were called.

His wife died some years back and I think at that point he quit caring so much and let go of control ..... that's when it started to become like any other company.

You really can't compare 70's Peavey stuff with anything made today. Even though this thread is old, the amount of old Peavey gear in the used market that still works is absolutely amazing. The problem is the new younger purchasers don't understand how any of it works, and are destroying it without remorse. I guess because they don't have much invested in it.

Back in the mid 70's we bought every piece of used Peavey gear we could find, simply because that was all we could get our hands on. It didn't sound good, none of it, but it was Loud AF. And we abused the Hell out of it. But in ways Peavey designed it to be abused. We didn't have crossovers, so the cabs matched the amps. We blew speakers left and right too. Eventually blew most of the amps. But a lot of that stuff still survived.

Today kids are being given, for free, 70's and 80's 15" and 18" bass cabinets, not subs, and are crossing them over at 30/40hz with 1500watt power amps, and wondering why everything is blowing up. So l don't think there is going to be much of the old Peavey stuff around in 10 more years.

If you had an old Peavey PA and made it sound great, it's because you really knew what you were doing. In 1987 I bought the EV 1502 speakers and matching 18" folded horn subs, and those sounded fantastic. But l didn't want everyone else sounding Fantastic thru my PA, as l had to rent it out to pay for it, so l bought a couple Peavey SP2 speakers and 118 SUB HC bass cabinets to rent out. And those were Solid and it was a great working system.

Today when l pull out that same Peavey PA people say it's the Best sounding PA they ever heard. And that's because that is what Rock and Roll used to sound like. It's a lost Art. The EV pa system l have sounds worlds better, because l used it so little, but the Peavey was my workhorse.

Today Peavey and Rock and Roll are both dead, so it doesn't matter what they do anymore.

30 years? We still have our Peavey Standard PA head and the 112PH speakers we bought with it in 1972. I aquired it a few years ago from our fiddle player before he went into the nursing home at age 89. We used that PA heavily from 1972 until it was stolen in 1987. We did eventually get it back but l already bought a new system, so we never used it again. But l fired it up and 50 years later it sounded exactly like it did when we bought it. Which sadly that's another way of saying it still sounds like crap. I bought a used Peavey Escort-3000 for $100 a few years ago, and that sounds amazingly good as well as being small, light, and pretty damn loud.
