Psalm 139 - rock acoustic style

Hi people,
I found this guitar track last night and put some words to it based on Psalm 139. I'm looking for what to add next so advice would be much appreciated - be specific please

you can delete the whole thread and just start another one..

when you hit edit post, there is an option at the top to delete the whole thread.. You can only do it in the first few hours I think..


I've had to do it a few times.. :)

This is a fine interpitation,tough to do with the Psalms.

dude, this tune rocks.....i think it needs big drums, an electric guitar, bass, and about 100 tracks of background vocals....big 80's production......
 
muzeman: Thanks .. I was really surprised how the vocals came out. Same gear as always NTK into my Voicemaster with a touch of de-essing for voice on tracking + a little EQ and compression on mixdown. I've got some new diffusors in the room and I'm wondering if they are helping the sound. I didn't notice when I was singing but it sure sounds a little different than the last time I recorded. As for the guitar... I honestly can't remember ! it was a while ago and I forgot I even recorded the tune till I came across it last night. I just thought I'd come up with some words and a melody and everything went really smoothly... all done in 2 hours. I've only got 4 mics and I can guess the guitar was recorded with my 2 $2 electret mics into my minidisk for the stereo effect with a touch of NTK added for detail. Funny thing is I borrowed a couple of NT3's to replace the electrets I was using but I really didn't like the sound... too crispy.

Gidge: 100 backgroud vocals... that could take a while... care to help ? (collaboration anyone ?). I got a bass and drums but no electric... maybe someone could help out. Thanks for the encouragement.
 
i really like this. like the way you play guitar. very good rhythm. lends itself to lots of additional stuff or stand on it's own very well.

you and chrisharris just whipping up melodies to any poem that comes your way. that's something i could not do. i'm impressed.

and you've got a great voice. and the acoustic sounds fabulous. and i'm jealous. and...

in short (cause i gotta go to bed now) you sound like a real musician.

Psalms is correct.
 
This is pretty good Dres.I think full Instrumentation I.E Drums,Bass Guitar,Power Chord guitar are in order...maybe some simple lead guitar fills here and there.........backing vox also.You can tell just by this sketch that it would make a good song recorded with full instrumentation.

I like this energy... you have a good vocal delivery... and you're saying you tracked the vox and guitar separately? Very impressive... they sound like they're in the same space...

Everything sparkles... yeah... this song begs for a full arrangement to come in after the first chorus...

You could sell this as secular music... betcha most people wouldn't even catch the bible refs...

Man...LOVED it. I too am in amazement that the git and vocals were recorded seperately.

Really really great. I'm kind of a sucker for an acoustic guitar and a GREAT voice.
 
I cant tell you all the stuff I hear in my head for possibilities for this. Very nice song and great playing and singing. I agree, it does sound like your just sitting in front of me showing me this new song you wrote. Very real sounding. Do some more for us.

I agree with most of the others in that this song ought to have drums, an electric guit, bass, double tracked vox, etc. Definitiely harmonies on the chorus.

Good singing, overall good job.
 
erichenryus: A real musician ! .... I think that's the nicest thing anyone's said ! Thanks. I guess all those years of playing in church are finally paying off. I've been dabbling in home recording now for 6 years (on average 2-3 hrs a week), and it really feels like it's coming together in the last few months.... mainly due to the purchase of my NTK and some professional sound treatment in my little room. Your comments mean a lot in a sometimes thankless hobby. Cheers :)

Kramer: Your right.. My spelling is unbelievable ! I will be adding extra instrumentation soon I hope. I have bass and drums covered ... maybe even keys. Glad you liked the song, stay tuned I'm gonna need help doing it justice as production continues.

participant: Yup that's me... I'm only a little guy. It's funny hearing a lot of the other voices on the forum... I feel kinda tiny next to all these big american accents. Still I try to make up for it in energy. I've tried tracking vocal and guitar together many times and whilst it's easier to play the sound and performance usually suffer. Separation is a huge problem and you often can't do your best vocal or guitar when your brain is doing both at once. I came up with the guitar part a few weeks ago so I've never tried to sing it while playing guitar.. I think it would take some practice because I've come up with some tricky phrasings.. it's a weird sensation trying to play the bits together when they've been written apart...it happened once before on another project. The mind says " I can do both parts ", the brain says "I can't do both parts simultaneously".. very weird. Now I'm really rambling ! thanks for your encouragement... secular music ?... things that make you go Hmmm

SixStringBlues: Why can't you tell me all the possibilities you hear ? ;) Seriously it will be a better project the more input I can get.

TripleM: Thanks mate. I'm itching to get working on this now. Unfortunately it's going to take at least another 24 hrs... I have a tendedcy to rush things :(
 
Personally

Every once in awhile, tunes get posted here that just do very well in the Winamp player on loop mode. Yours is one of several. There's nothing abrasive about this recording at all, and I'm glad you posted it.

I will add more parts to the song soon, but I will retain this first version too cause it seems I really struck something special with this first bash. By the way I've been listening to "Old Yella" quite a bit too.... great stuff.
 
dres, this sounds great over here. Would like to hear this when you get other insterments involved. Great voice man and lot'sO energy! enjoyed it.
 
Thanks David, funny thing is I was a little quiet in the cans when I recorded which I think made me sing out more... I didn't do it deliberately though. In fact I was worried my voice was about to give out too after an hour and half of working out a melody and words.... listening last night to my older recordings I really do think it's my best vocal recording so far... I also think the diffusor panels recently added to the room made a difference. I wonder if I'll be able to get that sound again or if it was a fluke ? I hope to post a new version very soon (2-3 days) ... didn't make it last night. Thanks again for taking the time to comment.
