Yamaha AW2816 Help... Any experts?
Just looking to get a few questions answered regarding my Yamaha 2816, and I have noticed that there are a few resident experts...
Equipment list - 2816, VTB-1 pre, CAD M179, MXL 603S, Wharfedale DPS8.1A's, Fender cyber-deluxe, and guitars (Taylor 812c, Ricky 650D) ... just in case any "what are you using" questions pop up
1. Everything I'm recording, even if I run it direct (i.e. my Taylor through an LR Baggs PADI or a direct out from my amp), is SUPER bassy. I feel like for anything to come through with any sparkle or clarity I have to eq out almost all the bass. This is especially true for vocals. I'm in an untreated extra bedroom for a studio, but I'm using a heavily padded walk in closet for a vocal booth, and even in there anything run with eq flat sounds like I'm talking through a pillow. Any suggestions? I am running my preamp through the channel inputs on the 2816 with the onboard gain running all the way down. Could that be it? Is it my room? I felt like I could explain it until I ran some gear as DI, and now I'm completely confused. Bass, bass, bass. I'm stumped.
2. Any time the signal on what I'm recording gets to a low point (trailing off vocal lines, that last little bit of a sustained fingerstyle guitar line), the recorded sound disappears into a "miniature pixelated explosion." By this, I mean rather than fading out as a smooth sound, it seems like there is something in the box saying "Hey, signal's not strong enough, so I can't pick it up at all." I'm not sure if anyone else knows what I mean, but its frustrating to the point where its changing the dynamics of pieces I'm trying to record. The sounds just crackle out as soon as the input volume trails out. Does the recorder need a "fully positive" signal at all times? Do I have some compressor, expander, ... on and not know it? Or is this just part of digital recording?
Any help you could give would be great. I've only had the box for about three weeks, so keep in mind these problems could be something simple I'm overlooking. Thanks ahead of time!
