Hey, I got such a good responce with the other title....when you're on to a good thing...lol. Well after playing 'round with my new 012's and 319 I'm in love....I know it's probably not the best thing to be loyal to such things as a brand of mic like I'm loyal to my Rogers drum collection, but they seem to just do it for me and for the price...well...So...what I'm wondering is if anyone has experience with the other Oktava's on offer and what they're like....good or bad....uses...ect, ect, you know the type of info I'm after....The models I'm interested in are:

Mk-219 (for better or worse)
MC-011 (the sound of the 012? Is it a dynamic version or a 012 with internal wind screen housing?
MKL-100
ML-19
MKL-2500

wow dude, good thing you didn't buy Neumanns :)

"hmm, so I figure I should stick with the brand name? maybe a U67 on kick, pair of U47s overhead....and that 3d surround ear thingy for room ambience?"

HA! I'll have what he's having.

From what little I know:

Mk-219 (for better or worse)

The same diaphragm and electronics as the Mk319 in a different housing. The Mk319 was intended as an improved housing for the earlier Mk219. The Mk219 is known to be prone to resonances, which some people have tried to fix by stuffing it with something or cutting up the casing with a hacksaw. That suggests that the Mk219 is "for worse," but I suppose it is another flavor, and it's cheap.

MC-011 (the sound of the 012? Is it a dynamic version or a 012 with internal wind screen housing?

I have been given to understand that it is an 012 (i.e. a condensor) but (i) you can't remove and interchange the capsule (which is the 012 cardioid) and (ii) it has a windscreen around the capsule. Visually, that's sure what it looks like. The body looks pretty darn similar.

MKL-100
ML-19
MKL-2500

Don't know much about those. I think the MKL100 is a tube condensor and the ML19 is a ribbon mic.

I've got a pair of 012's coming this week, partly based on your last post. I've also heard some nice acoustics recorded with them in the MP3 clinic.

I'd like to know: 1) What capsules are good for what? I'd like to see if they would be better than my Bheringer (hey back off...it was cheap!) for vocals. And 2) Is there a capsule that would better the SM57 for guitar amps?

Hope I'm not intruding, but your last post raised some questions for me. :D

What do you think the 012's self noise. I have had great success with them recording in the studio. I recently tried to use them to record a rain storm and they were just too noisy to really hear the subtle rain I was trying to capture.

I have a 012 cardiod that was hand selected from a group at
Guitar Center. So far so good-it's still working!
Anything to be depended upon should be purchased from
www.oktava.com AKA The Sound Room IMHO.

Could be the infamous quality control issue, because my 012's don't seem to be noisier than any other small diaphragm condensers i have.

You sure it wasn't the humidity adversely affecting the mics? Or perhaps your preamp was the source of the noise?

I think littledog might be right man....I've had no probs with mine either....

I doubt it was the preamp which is a Presonus Blue Tube. The Humidity may very well have been the cause as there seemed to be some random sub 20Hz thumps occuring.

Self noise hasn't been a problem for me. I've been mid-field mic'ing a Celtic lap harp with a fairly small voice, and I haven't run into a problem, and that's a challenge for a SD mic. I want to hear the new ribbon mic ?ML-52- Richie

i got the 219 about 3 weeks ago and love it. recently had a guy do some poetry over acoustic guitar and the spoken word sounds fantastic! i didn't touch the eq. it has a bass rolloff and a -10bd pad. just running it through my omni studio and it sounds great! Recorded some acoustic guitar and was not vey happy but thats why I love my 012's!

HA HA HA!!!
I thought you said Humility. I was thinking, well, yeah, it could be that.
I've had no noise problems with mine either. Very quiet.

Anyone had any use of the mics I mentioned?

Sorry man, I don't have experience with those mics. I was kinda hoping you could answer my questions about the 012's.

I take it you bought the ones with three capsules. I have used the standard cardiod capsules in an X-Y pattern on overheads that sounded pretty good. The hypercardiod could be used for High Hat and Snare.

You might just want to find out generally what are good applications for each type of polar pattern by searching the forum.

SLuiCe, I've had pretty good results using an 012 on a cab, but backed off 36" or so, as opposed to the SM57 right against the grill. Also, that's clean guitar at a low SPL. I haven't even tried it on a cranked amp w/ distortion. I sometimes use it with a close 57, almost as a room mic, and blend to taste. I haven't used it much for that, though, since I got a C3 and an NTK...Richie

I haven't used the tube mic..But I do have the ML19 Ribbon..Ive used it on female vox with really nice results and also acoustic/elect. guitar.I really like this mic..I use it when I want to "smooth" out the source sound..I got mine from [www.oktava.com] about 419.00..I have seen them on Ebay for less at about 500.00 a pair..They are not made anymore{since 1982 or so} so you will be buying used..Also this is a ribbon so you do need a pre thats got some gain..Good luck

Don

Thanks, Henri for explainig ML19. The new ribbon is ML52. You can talk Guitarrgh Center out of it for about $350, they're advertising closer to $500. We've been tracking acoustic guit and Celtic lap harp with 1 012 in front, and MK319 over the shoulder, and it's about the best combo we've come up with.-Richie
