hey, i need help deciding which ones to get. please give me a review of each mic and the highs and lows of both. I'm planning on using them mostly for overheads, but also for acoustic guitars as well. thanks!
then buy a pair of each. record with them. return the ones you dont like.
if you cant do that. try to find ones on the used market that are pretty much a low to fair price. buy both sets. sell back the one you dont like as much.
nothing is better than real experience with a mic...
ok. 3rd plan. buy the 603s cause they are cheaper.
They're pretty similar, but if you're using them mostly for overheads, I would recommend the mc012 for two reasons: 1)the 603 is noticeably brighter, which can be somewhat annoying on the cymbals and hi-hat. 2) They come with the -10db pad, which is useful for close-micing of loud drums.
That said, I still like the 603 on drum overhead, and I actually like them better on acc. guitar (than the mc012).
a stereo pair of mxl603's are a considerable amount cheaper than the mc012's.
I own a stereo pair of the mxl603's and have used mc012's at my school. They are both excellent. But if you are in it to get a sound that only us engineers will notice the difference than get something way more expensive

Hopefully the 603's I've bought from Tubedude are on their way.............once here, I'll be borrowing a pair of Oktava's to compare them with on acoustic.
Whadya mean "weird looking"................. . My son is still smiling.
Re the 603's...........IF they were shipped when I thought they were being shipped, I should see them over the next few working days. We are recording acoustics (CW80 and 525 at the moment), and I sure wish they would get here.
I'm in agreement with chessrock. Most of the time I like the MXL603S's more on acoustic guitar too... and the MC-O12's as overheads, but both can work.
Bottom line: you can't go wrong with either. You can get a matched pair of MXL 603s with case and two shockmounts for around $159 - $169. That's a fantastic deal. With the Oktavas, on the other hand, you can purchase additional capsules and/or an M1 LD head, which makes the Oktavas much more versatile.
where are the mxl's matched pair with shockmounts for $159-169? the cheapest i've seen them was $199 for that at 8th street. as for the oktavas, theyre on musicians friend and at guitar center for $200...and then the shockmounts would be another $40...not that big of a price difference...
Dealers don't advertise for those prices, you have to deal them down. 20% off retail is $40. 15% off retail is $30. You should be able to negotiate one of these.
