Hi all,

Ok.. I tore down my basement walls, cleared everything out and am now ready to start putting together my ceiling.

I have 7' ceilings in the basement and have a wood floor ontop of the joists. Here's my gameplan...

- Caulk all the seams of the floorboards from underneath with silicone caulk

- Put in either Owens Corning Acoustic Batts or the deltarockwool SA-Fire Board [or something equivalient] - put it in as thick as possible

-Underneath that put a thick vinyl matt (from acoustic first - similar to auralex soundbarrier but cheaper).

-Then build the Drywall ceiling with RC-1 (or RC-2)

Now my question is this - should i staple the vinyl soundbarrier stuff directly to the joist or should i use firring strips, then attach the vinyl to the firring stips and then use firring strips again for the RC-1. Is the RC-1 / sheetrock construction going to take a great deal of room? (I'd like to have at least 6'4 or 6'5 clearance - enough for a tall person to sing...

Any help would be appreciated (also any recommandations on building materials :)

Not sure what the vinyl barrier buys you. For my money, I'd go with two layers of gyp board attached to RC channel screwed directly to your studs. Everything else as you described.
