Does anyone have an opinion about the Marshall MXL 603s vs. the similar Ovtava product (I think they are 603s as well). Which would be better for a stereo pair?

You would be talking about Oktava MC012 aka MK012 (same mic) and Marshall MXL603. In cardioid configuration, the mics are very similar. I prefer the 012 beause it has a 10db pad, and because you can screw other capsules onto it, most particularly omni and the LOMO large diaphragm head. For $20 more, you buy the pad and some additional options.-Richie

I own both, and I appreciate the mc012 for the added options the interchangeable capsules (and pad) bring to the table.
Other than that, I think of the 603 as being a little bit brighter. This can sometimes be problematic on overly-bright cymbals. My preference is for the mc012 on overheads, but I prefer the 603 on accoustic guitar almost every time. They are pretty similar, though, and either one should do the job for you just fine.

I have a pair of the octava's but not the marshall's. I do like them , primarily use them as overheads on the drum kit. I've heard good things about the 603's though. I'm sure you'd like either of them.

Harvey will probably chime in before too long, but he has said that the 603s are very close to the Oktavas (when the Oktavas are using the cardiod capsule). Sounds like the decision lies in whether or not you want those extra options.
