Anyone ever get a good sound using the nt1 on kick? I will eventually buy a proper kick mic but for now I am trying to work with what I have. Will I damage the mic because of the high spls?

Well...

Probably, if you do not brake it, you will most likely overload it.

Do you have an SM57 or some other mic? Any Dynamics?
There is no use in having those kind of condensers, since you need more Lows and less hiss.

Peace...

Yea. Stick a pop-screen in front of it, though, and you should be fine.

kick the kick

probably not a good idea to use the nt1 in that particular application. The spl of a kick will vary depending on how its set up i.e. is it a big one does it have padding in it/is the drummer a heavy hitter? I had good success with two mics I covered the kick with a coupple of thin mattrasses to make a tunnel and put a senhieser 835(?) dynamic into the drum very close to the skin and then put a nt3 in the end of my tunneland blended the two sounds.the dynamic gets the click of the head and the condenser gets the boom of the tunnel the nt3 has a higher spl than the nt1.But I have got good sounds using a sm57 and some perserverience.
