No name mics

my friend is gonna do a test with a few no name mics vs his 414 and 4060...

one that he brought to my attention was the Se electronics Z5600...i have a se5000... its a nice mic....but i'll have my 4060 soon

but the review i saw on the z5600 seem to be to good to be true... a two-time Grammy nominated engineer and producer saying "the Z5600 is perhaps the best mic I have ever heard. "

he put it against a 414's,u87 and 2 others...

this mic goes for arounf $650.. i know we should be able to find it on the net a little lower.. but do you think its worth it...???

well after reading the little review in TapeOp.. the z5600 isn't a joke.. it can hang with a vintage U47..DAMN.. and keep in mind it has a price tag of $650... my boy just ordered 1.. he wants to see how good it fits his needs and his studio...

so this is how these rumours get started! I'm sitting here with the same issue of tape-op, looking at the same review, and damn if it doesn't seem like you're presenting a somewhat slanted summary of the review , taking the comments out of context.

for instance, what if i were to quote: "...I tried the Z5600 on a male singer, and it just wasn't right. The scooped nature of the mic seemed to result in a skewed sound, with fundamental voice tones swimming in and out of the mix."

Guess what? That's from the same Tape-Op review.

The point is, the U47 comment was: "the two mics were way more similar in character than I expected" (...given the factor of ten cost difference). Read that carefully - that doesn't mean it sounded as good as, or even nearly as good as a U47. Just that it sounded MORE like a U47 than the reviewer thought it would, given the price.

The key is the final summary: "the 5600 seems liike a good bet for for a studio looking to purchase an affordable tube condenser." While that's not a bad recommendation, it's hardly an enthusiastic ringing endorsement.

That's not to say you shouldn't get this mic, and that you won't be very happy with it. Just don't go overboard rationalizing your buying decision by thinking that this mic will make all your fantasies come true and bring about world peace. Or even that you managed to score yourself a U47 substitute for a couple of hundred bucks.

either way,this mic is no slouch...and for the price my boy ordered his for $619, it seems worth it.. were gonna A-B it to a Akg solif tube,ksm44,Se5000,At4060,414, and if we can a u87ai.
