No luck with MC-012

This weekend I had to return my second pair of Oktava MC-012s to Guitar Center do to one of the mics going bad. It went from sounding great to sounding like a chainsaw. The first pair I bought I tried the mics in the store but when I got home I could not get a XLR cable to fit in the jack of one of the mics. I think the Russians hate me.


I would love to buy MC-012s from thesoundroom.com but I don't have the extra 200 bucks to do it. is there any other place to get these mics thats a reliable store?

Unfortunately, they'll sell the mics you returned to somebody else. It doesn't do much for Oktava's reputation. Maybe using Guitar Center's evil twin, Musician's Friend might turn up an actual new mic or two.

dune, the QC at Oktava is infamous for being uneven.
If you need a MC012 you can DEPEND on, order it from
www.okatava.com AKA "The Sound Room" where they check them over thoroughly and back up their service.
(after you get your $$ back from GC!)

I had the same experience with the cables not being correct too.
They should have cables at GC that match the Oktava.

Well thats the plan. buy them from the sound room, i just got to save up the extra cash.

i bought my mc012 pair from the sound room and they sound awsome. I use a little mackie board and they still sound great. you will not be dissappointed.
just spend a little extra time on learning good mic positoning. you will be using less or no eq with good mic placement

That's surprising. I've heard 012's that *were* bad, but not that *went* bad. What form of hardware/assembly issue makes a mic go south? I suspect environmental factors at work here. Of course, it may be your mic, and your retailer suck. I have bought Oktavas from the Sound Room and 1 from GC, and they all work quite well. Keep your eyes peeled. One of Taylor Johnson's matched sets was up on ebay recently.-Richie
