I want to record audio (10-20 tracks).I have a compaq 900mhz,64mb memorary,40gb hard drive.ME edition.DVD Rom,CD-RW.Yamaha DSP 2416 card,AX44 Break-out box(4 ins 4 outs),Sonar software. 8 channel mixer,sm58's and sm57's,drum machine, speakers, amps and instruments. Can I make somewhat decent recordings? (I still want to surf the net on this system). What else do I need ? Should raise the memorary to 256 or higher, what about the hard drive ? Would it be wise to update the card to 2496 ? Delete some programs on my computer to optimize performance? And some advice on a half way decent studio mic.Budget around $400. Thank You

More memory will help. 256 is nice, and cheap.
Be sure you turn all programs off except Explorer and Systray. You want as little running in the background as possible.

I am a rode nt1000 fan when it comes to studio mics. a lot of guys like the Studio Project mics also... there really are a lot of good choices in the $200 - $300 range. You might want to do a search in the mic board, lots of good info there.

But it looks like you have enough to get started. What I suggest before you buy anything more is that you make recordings!!!!!
When you make a recording and you say 'shit, it would be nice if I had a....' then you know what to buy!

'shit it would be nice if I had a Motif rack module'

Yes, more memory.
A dedicated 2nd HD for audio would be advised.
Possibly a dual boot as well.
The Yamy DSP cards are not very popular anymore so a AP 2496 would be a nice upgrade and their very reliable.
And ME is also unpopular...WIN 2k or XP would be a better choice.

Thanks guys, I will start with upgrading the memory. Then go to the mic section here and see what suits my needs. Then try and record my ass off (experience is the real teacher).I also pretty much figured my sound card was out dated as well as my computer. So I will practice with what I have until I can upgrade my sound card and a better computer. And I will also keep researching these posts. There is so much good information here. This is a great site. Thanks again
