Hey everyone

My computer just died. It turns itself on and keeps restarting every few seconds. And I can't do anything to fix it. It's an HP Intel Pentium 4, 512 RAM. Currently I can't afford a Mac, and I would appreciate any suggestions about what to get if I am using Protools 7.

Thanks

I don't know what kind of computer you should get, but I can give you some things to check to fix your current one.

Constant rebooting can be from.....

1. Bad Power Supply
2. Dirty Computer (Dust, Lint, etc. causing excessive heat or short circuiting)
3. Overheating due to dead fan
4. Bad Hard-drive
5. Bad Motherboard
6. Bad - nearly any other component.

If I were you, I would open the case, and gently remove any dust and debris with a small paint brush and some compressed air. Leave the system PLUGGED IN so it remains grounded while you work on it. Touch the metal of the case to ground yourself to prevent any static discharge. (If you give any components a shock - they will be screwed).

Check all your fans. Make sure no wires got caught in any fans.

You can get a replacement power supply for $25 to $100. (Match the output wattage of what you already had..... or exceed it. Hell..... just get a 550 Watt).

Can you here a strange noise when it reboots? Hard-drive's oftern make like a backwards CLUNK sound (sorry - I can hear it in my head, but can't describe it) when they are physically screwed up.

I'm a tech for a living, and see this kind of thing everyday, and if it we're on my bench, I would have no choice but to fix the problem. (I don't get too many customers who say FORGET IT.... JUST BUILD ME A WHOLE NEW ONE).

Good luck either way.

Mac's are only a little expensive...

I just made the switch from PC to mac. But it was mainly because I like to use logic and I already have gear that's made for logic (from my pc logic days): amt8/unitor8 midi interfaces, logic control, lots of universal plug in binaries, and so forth. Logic 8 dropped shortly after I bought my mac and it seems like quite the upgrade.

I paid $850 for a refurb 17" imac with 2.0 mhz c2d processor. So macs aren't that expensive.

(well, I also had a $500 apple gift cert from my spouse...)

Anyway.

1) What do folks on the duc (digidesign user conference) have to say about mobos and processors?

2) will you be using a firewire interface at some point or sticking with pci? (Does digi make pci interfaces? I'm not very familiar with them. It sounds like people are getting higher track counts with firewire than usb2 when testing.) When trying to find a mobo, I'd look for something with chips that are compatible with your gear. For example. Would an agere or TI firewire chip set be better than VIA?

3) lots of enthusiast sites like: sharkyextreme, firingsquad, and toms hardware have tests of gaming rigs with an emphasis on a) cpu horsepower, b) graphics. So you can look at those features and get a sense for what you may want to buy.

Of course for audio recording you aren't going to need a $600 video card.

I have a different problem than you do.

My computer works great. But it is older.

My solution? I think I'm going to keep my computer, but dump pro tools.

Reaper doesn't seem to need anywhere near the Computer-power that Pro Tools likes to suck.

That and I am sick and tired of Pro Tools' acting wierd every 2 weeks. It really seems to like to go nuts whenever I really need it.

Did you actually read his post?

Congrats on the most useless reply ever

Listen, goo gobbler, eat my ass just like your mama does!

My answer stands, and is legit. "I can't afford a Mac" is a load of crap. It's simply silly to spend a ton of money on gear, and protools, and then skimp on the core component. If you are going to use Protools, then use a Mac. In fact, if you are serious about recording, use a Mac. There is a reason it is an industry standard. If you have to, look for a second hand Mac. Windows is a buggy OS. Period. Recording software, and hardware is simply iffy with it at best. If you are that stuck on Windows, run it in the Mac OS.

Now, exactly what have you added to this thread, douche bag? Talk about a useless post.

Wow.

He's topped his last post!

He's actually exceeded in every category ---

 • Personal attack
 • Bad info presented as fact
 • Overall angry tone

What a pure joy it must be to try to have personal commerce with this gentleman.

I'm adding him to my 'buddies' list.

.

With that attitude he'll go far around here....

Isn't it nice launching personal attacks from the anonymity (that means we don't know who you are, just thought I'd let you know so you don't have to look it up) ov posting from his PC, oops I mean Mac.....

It was a response to a personal attack. Guess you missed that part?

I have been working with computers since 1980. Before there was such a thing as Windows, or DOS. I know computers, and software down to basic. Windows has always been buggy. Pick any version. Fact. Period.

Thanks for the positive rep "GO FUCK YOUSELF THE WAY I FUCKED YOUR MAMA'S ASS LAST NIGHT, BITCH!", unfortunately, as you have no rep yourself, it didn't change mine at all :(

Um...you were the first with the personal attack from behind the keyboard, there, Kettle. You were the first to play the asshole card. Don't like the response? Then I suggest you don't play Troll.

I never said a Windows PC doesn't have it's place, or uses. However, it has no place in a professional recording studio, or a serious armature studio. That is unless you want to look at gay porn, like you like to do.

84 post, and 48,000 rep points:rolleyes: You get a point per BJ? Certainly no other way you earned them. Hanging out in "free rep" threads, there, poser? Don't talk to me about useless post, and "going far here". You have still yet to ad anything useful to this thread, and your post are the most useless of any here.

You think I didn't know that? Rep points are meaningless (hence your 48,000 rep points on only 86 post)

It's not the gift, but the thought that counts.;)

Besides, it's still good advice, and something you should do.

Could this guy be any more of an idiot?

Attacks me first, and then bashes me for my reply being "anonymous". What a loser! Pathetic.

Skipped through all the rants etc.. so excuse me if this was already mentioned. a mac mini works perfectly for pro tools.. One of my buddies uses this as his main daw.. So "can't afford a MAC" doesn't have to be an issue.

If you really want to go PC just be sure the chipset matches the protools requirements on the digidesign webpage. (or as someone mentioned above, try a different daw than pro tools)

I feel left out. I haven't experienced a Windows related bug with XP at all....Never had a virus either. I guess I'm going to have to stop maintaining my PC properly if I want to be in with the in-crowd.

Consider yourself lucky. You are in an elite crowd. You might also want to ad the word "yet" to the end of that statement. There is a reason Mac is an industry standard.
